Elon Musk has once again become a trillionaire after rising share prices in his companies SpaceX and Tesla pushed his estimated net worth above $1 trillion on Monday, October 5.
Forbes estimated Musk’s fortune at $1 trillion during Monday’s trading session, an increase of about $30.6 billion from the previous trading day. Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index later put his wealth at approximately $1.04 trillion, reflecting the sharp rise in the value of his SpaceX and Tesla holdings.
The latest increase was driven primarily by gains in SpaceX, which saw its shares rise about 7.6% to $171.09, their highest level since mid-June. Tesla shares also gained, adding to the value of Musk’s holdings. Bloomberg reported that his stakes in the two companies account for more than 98% of his total wealth.
Musk first entered the trillionaire ranks in June after SpaceX began trading publicly on the Nasdaq. The historic stock-market debut valued the rocket company at nearly $2 trillion and pushed Musk’s estimated fortune above the trillion-dollar threshold for the first time. Forbes initially estimated his wealth at about $1.1 trillion following the debut.
His position above the threshold did not last. A subsequent decline in SpaceX and Tesla shares pushed his estimated fortune below $1 trillion before he regained the milestone later in June. The latest rally therefore marks another return to trillionaire status rather than a first-time achievement.
The fluctuations highlight how closely Musk’s personal wealth is tied to the market value of the companies he controls or has significant stakes in. Because much of his fortune is held in company shares rather than cash, changes in stock prices can add or subtract tens of billions of dollars from his estimated net worth in a matter of hours.
SpaceX has become particularly important to Musk’s fortune following its public-market debut. The company has expanded beyond its traditional rocket-launch business into areas including satellite internet, artificial intelligence and other technology ventures, making its valuation a major factor in calculations of Musk’s wealth.
Tesla remains another major component of his fortune. The electric vehicle company’s share price has continued to influence Musk’s position on global billionaire rankings, alongside developments surrounding its artificial-intelligence and autonomous-driving businesses.
Musk remains the world’s richest person, with Amazon founder Jeff Bezos reported as a distant second at approximately $371.5 billion in Forbes’ Monday estimate. However, billionaire rankings can change quickly because they are heavily influenced by movements in publicly traded shares.
The latest milestone underscores the extraordinary scale and volatility of Musk’s wealth, with a single strong trading session adding tens of billions of dollars to his estimated fortune.
