Kimi Antonelli Dominates United States Grand Prix as F1 Championship Race Heats Up
Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli strengthened his position at the top of the Formula 1 Drivers' Championship with an impressive victory at the 2026 United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, October 25. The Italian delivered a controlled performance at the Circuit of The Americas, finishing ahead of Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Red Bull Racing's Max Verstappen.
Antonelli completed the 56-lap race in 1:35:16.650, crossing the finish line 13.078 seconds ahead of Leclerc, while Verstappen finished third, 17.485 seconds behind the winner. The result marked Antonelli's ninth Grand Prix victory of the season and further underlined Mercedes' competitiveness during the closing stages of the championship.
The Mercedes driver made an excellent start and capitalised on Verstappen's difficult getaway to take control of the race. Antonelli then managed his tyres effectively, using a one-stop strategy while several rivals made two pit stops. Despite a late Virtual Safety Car period, he maintained a comfortable advantage to secure another important victory.
Leclerc finished second after a strong late-race push, continuing Ferrari's fight for valuable championship points. Verstappen completed the podium in third, while Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton crossed the line in fourth. McLaren's Lando Norris finished fifth, followed by Red Bull's Isack Hadjar in sixth and McLaren's Oscar Piastri in seventh. Mercedes driver George Russell finished eighth after receiving a five-second penalty.
The result also had major implications for the Drivers' Championship. Antonelli moved 123 points clear of Russell and 124 points ahead of Hamilton, leaving him on the verge of becoming the youngest world champion in Formula 1 history. However, the title was not mathematically secured in Austin, meaning the championship battle will continue into the next round in Mexico City.
With five races remaining after the United States Grand Prix, Antonelli needs to finish ninth or higher at the Mexican Grand Prix to guarantee the title, regardless of his closest rivals' results. His position gives Mercedes a significant advantage heading into the final phase of the season, although the remaining races will determine when the championship is officially decided.
The race in Austin also kept the Constructors' Championship battle alive. Ferrari gained ground on Mercedes, but the gap between the two teams remained substantial, with further points available in the remaining rounds. Both teams will be looking to maximise their results as the season moves towards its conclusion.
Attention now turns to the Mexico City Grand Prix, where Antonelli could secure the Drivers' Championship if he finishes within the required position. After another commanding performance in the United States, the young Mercedes driver is approaching a potentially historic milestone in his Formula 1 career.
