Aston Villa finally found their winning touch in the Premier League, producing a dramatic 3–2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday. Unai Emery’s side looked destined for a comfortable afternoon after building a commanding three-goal advantage, but Tottenham’s late resurgence transformed the closing stages into a tense battle. Johan Manzambi, Nicolas Jackson and Emiliano BuendÃa put Villa in control before Conor Gallagher and Jan Paul van Hecke sparked a late Spurs revival. Villa ultimately held their nerve to secure their first league victory of the season.
Tottenham began the match with greater attacking intent, forcing Aston Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki into several important interventions during the opening stages. Spurs appeared determined to end their difficult start to the campaign, but despite their early pressure, they struggled to turn possession and opportunities into a breakthrough. Villa gradually settled into the contest and began finding spaces in the Tottenham defence.
The breakthrough arrived in first-half stoppage time. Johan Manzambi reacted quickly to a Boubacar Kamara delivery and finished from close range to give Villa a 1–0 lead. The timing of the goal was particularly damaging for Tottenham, who had been competing well for much of the opening half. Manzambi's strike also marked a memorable moment as he made his Premier League start count with a goal.
Tottenham thought they had responded through Mohammed Kudus after the restart, but the effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR review. Instead of allowing the setback to disrupt them, Villa took advantage of the spaces Tottenham were leaving behind as the hosts pushed forward.
Villa doubled their advantage in the 67th minute through Nicolas Jackson. The forward combined effectively with Manzambi before beating his defender and finding the net, putting Emery’s side in a commanding position. Jackson’s goal gave Villa greater confidence while leaving Tottenham with a huge task to rescue the match.
The visitors appeared to put the contest beyond Tottenham in the 79th minute when Emiliano BuendÃa produced a superb long-range finish. With Villa leading 3–0 and the clock moving into the final stages, the three points seemed almost certain. However, Tottenham refused to surrender and finally found the goals they had been searching for throughout the opening matches of their league campaign.
Conor Gallagher pulled one back in the 86th minute, ending Tottenham’s wait for a Premier League goal this season. Spurs then pushed forward in search of an extraordinary comeback, and Jan Paul van Hecke headed home in the seventh minute of added time to make it 3–2. The late goal created a nervous finish, but Villa managed to withstand the final pressure and preserve their advantage.
The result gives Aston Villa their first Premier League victory of the campaign after a difficult opening four matches. They move onto four points from five games, while Tottenham remain without a league win and drop into the relegation zone with two points.
For Villa, the victory provides a much-needed lift and rewards Emery’s side for their improved attacking efficiency. Tottenham, meanwhile, are left to reflect on another frustrating afternoon after allowing a promising performance to unravel. Despite finally breaking their scoring drought, Spurs could not prevent another defeat, leaving Roberto De Zerbi’s side with plenty to address during the international break.
